Iraqi Court sentences one of IS Leader’s deputies to death

Baghdad –  An Iraqi Court on Wednesday sentenced to death a Senior Member of Islamic State, who was one of the deputies of the Extremist Group’s Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a Judicial Spokesperson said.

The court sentenced Ismail al-Ithawi to death by hanging.

Spokesman Abdul-Sattar al-Birqdar said al-Ithawi held several other positions within Islamic State including the head of the fatwa committee and a member in a committee responsible for developing educational curricula for the group.

Al-Ithawi escaped from Iraq to Syria then Turkey, where he was arrested after cooperation between Iraqi and Turkish intelligence, he added.

In December, Iraq declared victory over Islamic State, having recaptured all the territory taken by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

Cells believed to be linked to Islamic State have since launched scattered attacks in different parts of Iraq as al-Baghdadi’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Many are facing trial in Iraq, including foreign fighters, for joining the group.
