Warri (Delta)- Itsekiri chiefs are yet to issue official statement on the state of health of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase II, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The chiefs on Monday invited newsmen to converge at the Olu’s palace situated in Ekurede Itsekiri as early as 9 a.m. am for briefing.

Although the reason for the invitation was not disclosed to newsmen, it might not be unconnected with the rumour of the death of the Itsekiri monarch.

However after waiting for hours, a source from the palace told anxious newsmen the chiefs were still trying to fine-tune a statement before it would be issued to newsmen.

“The chiefs are still crossing the “t” and doting the “i” before they will issue the statement to the press.

“We will call you as soon as the chiefs are through with the document,’’ the source, who sought anonymity told newsmen.

The influential Itsekiri King was reported by an online medium “THE WILL” to have died on Friday in Reddington Hospital, Lagos.

It was reported that the monarch sustained brain injury when he fell from a stair in his private residence in Warri.

Although there was no confirmation of the report by palace chiefs, activities around the palace suggested that something had happened.

For instance the Four Square Gospel Church inside the palace was closed to worshipers on Sunday.

Instead, the worshipers held their Sunday service inside the Church Convocation Centre some meters away from the palace.

The monarch ascended the throne on May 2, 1987 and marked 28th anniversary of his ascension in May 2015. (NAN)
