The council said this in Yenogoa while reacting to the release of three Dutchmen who were kidnapped at Letugbene, Ekeremor Local Government Area in Bayelsa.
The Dutch nationals: Mr Erhard Leffers, Mr Marianne Hendricks- Vos and Mr Yandries Groenenedijk were kidnapped on May 4 and rescued by Police on Saturday night.
A statement by Eric Omare, the Spokesman for IYC, said that the residents, under the umbrella of IYC, played a major role toward the release of the kidnapped foreigners.
He said that the creek residents worked with security agencies to rescue the Dutchmen.
Omare said the IYC, on Thursday, issued a two-day ultimatum to the kidnappers as part of its contribution toward the release of the victims.
“The IYC commends Ijaw youths and particularly, Ijaw Youth Leader and Businessman, Mr Negerese Berry, who led efforts towards their release.
“Their release was sequel to the two-day ultimatum issued by the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Comrade Udengs Eradiri on Thursday, the 8th of May, 2014 in Yenagoa to the kidnappers.
“The leading and exemplary role played by the Bayelsa State Government towards the release of the kidnapped Dutch Nationals is commendable.
“We recommend same to other state governments especially those in the North East.
“The fight against criminality is the collective responsibility of everybody including youths, community leaders, local, state and Federal Government.
“This is as demonstrated in the release of the kidnapped three Dutch nationals.
“We call on governments at the state and federal levels to double their efforts towards creation of jobs for youths as it is the most potent way of fighting these crimes,” it said. (NAN)
