The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that candidates who missed the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be allowed to retake the exam.
According to JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, this decision was made to accommodate candidates who were unable to attend the initial exam due to various reasons.
The 2025 UTME was marred by controversy, with over 78% of candidates scoring below 200 points out of 400. A technical review revealed a significant error affecting 379,997 candidates from 157 centers in Lagos and the South-East regions. A resit examination was conducted from May 16 to May 19, with approximately 95% of scheduled candidates participating.
Oloyede explained that the technical error was caused by faulty server updates, which prevented candidate responses from being uploaded during the first three days of the exam. “Normally, we hold one mop-up nationwide for those with one issue or another. This time, we are creating a new mop-up. Even those who missed the earlier exam due to absence, we will extend this opportunity to them,” he said.
The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the technical mishap, while some lawmakers have demanded the cancellation of the 2025 UTME and the resignation of JAMB’s registrar. “The whole thing has lost its integrity. It has lost its fairness. People who took the time and prepared for exams were no longer in a position to take those exams,” said Rep. Iduma Igariwey ¹.
The results of the rescheduled exam are expected to be released on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 ².
