Dutse – Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa, on Monday said his administration has earmarked 3,000 hectares of land for the cultivation of sesame in the state.
Badaru made this known in an interview with newsmen in Dutse.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that sesame is a plant, cultivated for its seeds which yield light edible oil for use in various industries.
According to him, the dicision to pursue the project is because the state has competitive advantage in the production of sesame and will earn alot from it.
“We have done some key selection of crops that we want to promote. Like I have always said, we have competitive advantage in the production of sesame seeds.

“So for that, we have earmarked 3,000 hectares for the production of sesame seeds,’’ he said.
Badaru explained that the 3, 000 hectares were secured through farmers’ cooperatives in the state.
“We are going to give the farmers seeds for free, we are also going to give fertiliser at subsidised rate to encourage the production of the seed in the state,’’ he said.
The governor said extension service workers would be deployed to guide farmers in order to ensure the success of the project.
“We are going to involve our extension workers to make sure that they run the farms successfully and according to the convention so prescribed,’’ he added. (NAN)
