LAGOS – Habu Ahmed Gumel, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) is to be accorded a special reception for his many outstanding achievements in the field of sports by the Jigawa State [pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]Government.
A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the NOC, Tony Ubani, said the event would hold at the Jigawa State NYSC Camp in Dutse on Jan. 25, at the instance of Gov. Sule Lamido.

The statement said that it was as a result of “the giant strides that the astute sports administrator and engineer has made in Sports Administration — local and international — as well as in his engineering practice.
“Since his return as president of the NOC after a keenly-contested election into the NOC executive board at Asaba, the Delta capital, where he defeated former president Sani Ndanusa, Gumel has vowed to allow his accomplishments to speak for him.
In a response to the announcement by the Jigawa government, Gumel said: “Words are inadequate in expressing my joy.’’
Born on April 1 1949, Gumel is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a position he attained in 2009.
He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the Civil Engineering Institute, Kiev, Ukraine in 1976.
Gumel is also currently, president, Nigeria Volleyball Federation since 1988; Executive Vice-President, Confederation of African Volleyball (since 1997) and was its Treasurer (1997-2001).
He had served as NOC president from 2001-2010, and thereafter, lost the position to Ndanusa for a term, before winning it back in Asaba.
The IOC member is currently an executive vice president of the International Volleyball Federation. He had served as the FIVB Technical Delegate for the London 2012 Olympic Games and is also a member of the Steering Committee of the FIVB Development Fund since 2010.
He served as Director, Sports Facilities, National Sports Commission (NSC), Abuja between 2000-2009; Presidential Committee Member, All-Africa Games (2002-2003); Member/Chairman, Technical Committee, Abuja Bid Committee for the 2014 Commonwealth Games (2005-2007).
Gumel had been President, Zone 3, Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) (2005-2009); ANOCA Executive Board Member (2005-) and Treasurer-General of ANOCA since 2009.
He is also serving on three IOC Commissions — Sport and Environment (since 2010), TV Rights and New Media (since 2014) and the Coordination for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020 in Tokyo (since 2013)
A fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering since 2014, Gumel, after his National Youth Service Corps Scheme at the Yankari Games Reserve between (1976 and 1977), was also Deputy General Manager, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Lagos between 1985 and 1992.
Gumel was also an Executive Director (Operations), FHA, Abuja (1993-1999); President, Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) (2000-2001) and President, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) (2004-2010);
He is currently serving as the Executive Secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund, since 2009. (NAN)
