ABUJA – The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, has said that repositioning of the postal sector will facilitate development in ECOWAS sub-region.
Johnson stated this at the opening of West African postal conference on Friday in Abuja.
According to her, governments in West Africa stand a better chance of achieving more inclusive development if the sector is repositioned for better performance.
The minister said that the aim of the conference is to find ways of improving postal services in member countries.
Johnson explained that the postal sector remained relevant and should be developed in such a way that it would offer services that meet international best practices.
She noted the relevance of postal services in moving messages, documents, parcels, products, and finances across the sub-region.
“It is the universally accessible channel through which economic, social, financial and digital opportunities can be extended to the broadest range of the population, especially in the rural areas.’’
The ministers responsible for postal services, telecommunication and ICT services in Mali, Ghana, Benin republic, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria are attending the conference. (NAN)
