ALKALI – President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday expressed sadness over the death of Prof. Nur Alkali, a delegate to the 2014 National Conference in Abuja.
Alkali, who represented Nigeria’s Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) at the conference, died in his residence on Friday night in Maiduguri.
Aged 68, the deceased was a professor of History and two-term Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri between 1985 and 1992.
In a statement issued by Dr Reuben Abati his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jonathan commiserated with Alkali’s family, the leadership and delegates to the conference, as well as the NSCIA.

He urged the family, friends, associates and colleagues of the deceased at the conference “to be consoled by the knowledge that he lived a fulfilled life of patriotic service to his community and the country.”
“Jonathan believes that although Alkali has sadly passed away before the conclusion of the work of the conference, the nation will always owe him a debt of gratitude for his worthy contributions to the conference.
“The deceased will also be remembered for his distinguished service on several other national assignments.
“These include Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri; Director-General, National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and member, Presidential Committee on Insecurity in the North-East.
“The president prays that God Almighty will comfort all who mourn Alkali and grant his soul peaceful eternal rest,” the statement said. (NAN)
