ABUJA – The Presidency on Tuesday in Abuja said President Goodluck Jonathan would host and honour the country’s medal winners and their coaches at the just-concluded 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, said Jonathan was looking forward to receiving the team at the Presidential Villa.
It said the President also congratulated other members of the Nigerian team for “their sterling performance’’ at the games which ended on Sunday. [eap_ad_1] “Jonathan particularly applauds the elating accomplishment of Blessing Okagbare who gloriously dominated the female sprints, and the other athletes who won medals for the country at the Games.
“The President believes that the athletes’ very impressive performance at the Games is a further demonstration of the indomitable spirit of Nigerians.
“It equally shows the great heights we can attain with hard work, commitment, dedication, courage and patriotism.
“Jonathan assures the athletes and their handlers that his administration will continue to do its best to encourage them and support sports development in the country,’’ the statement said.
Nigeria finished eighth out of the 71 participating nations with a total of 36 medals.
The medals were made up of 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.(NAN)
