ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Youths and Students’ Affairs, Comrade Jude Imagwe, has condemned the lavish reception given to South African President, Mr. Jacob Zuma, by Imo State Governor, Mr. Rochas Okorocha.
In a statement, made available to Sundiata Post, Imagwe described the action of the governor as lacking in focus, objective and common sense.
The statement said, “Nigerians are again appalled by the insensitivity exhibited by Governor Rochas Okorocha over his stupendous and unwarranted expenditure when he received in audience the President of South Africa, Mr. Jacob Zuma. The recent display of crass ignorance and insensitivity came less than a fortnight after the same governor of an impoverished state lavished public funds in a state-organised birthday party where poor folks were made to spend their last kobo to prepare cakes for him.
“For Okorocha to have expended such money to host a man, who just 36 hours before was slammed with more than 72 corrupt charges by the country’s judiciary showed the way and manner he is governing the state.”
He expressed angst that Okorocha could expend millions of naira to honour a man in whose backyard, many Nigerians have been killed in the last one year through xenophobic attacks, adding that, “Again, many civil servants and pensioners have not been paid and even where they were paid, they were forced to sign off more than 50 per cent of their salary to the government.”
Imagwe asked, “What is the essence of erecting a full clothed statue in Owerri for a man whose citizens he is governing found it fit to erect only a nude statue for. If South Africans feel that Zuma was not worth honouring at home, why did Okorocha honour him in Nigeria. What does he intend to achieve.
“The action only depicts us as corrupt people who lack decency and decorum,” he stressed.
“I call on Okorocha to stop this charade and concentrate on real governance. He has less than two years of his eight years to leave office, yet he cannot boast of any legacy he is bequeathing to the people of the state,” Imagwe concluded.
