Abuja – The Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) on Monday said it was preparing to hold U-17 National Junior Championships next month.
Bashir Bassey, the federation’s national Coach, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the body had yet to decide on the venue of the competition.
Bassey said the championships would serve as trials to select players who would represent the country at the African Junior Championship (AJC) in Tunisia.
He said that it would be Nigeria’s first appearance at the competition, adding that the country would do everything possible to ensure a good outing.
“We are sending out invitations to various states to notify them and to get their athletes prepared for the event.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“We have 16 weight categories, eight each for the males and females to compete in.
“The last time Nigeria participated in a World Junior championship was in 1976, so, we felt it was necessary to prepare well for the continental competition and possibly compete at the world stage.’’
The coach explained that the federation was still fine-tuning necessary logistics ahead of the championships. (NAN)
