Kano – The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday appealed to the United Kingdom (UK) to redouble its support to the state and the country in general.
Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, made the call when he received the Minister of International Development and a Member of the UK Parliament, Mr Nick Hurd, on a courtesy visit in Kano.
Rurum commended the British government for their support to Nigeria through the Department for International Development (DFID) in the areas of education, health, security and the fight against corruption.
“We appreciate your support in these areas, but we also want you to increase the support from 60 per cent to 90 per cent,’’ he said.
According to him, if such request is granted, especially in the Northern part of the country, the high level of illiteracy would be reduced drastically.
The speaker also called on Britain to focus on other developmental programmes that would have great impact on Nigerians.
Earlier, Hurd said they were in Nigeria to inspect some of the projects funded by UK government through the DFID.
Hurd explained that 60 per cent of the projects and programmes sponsored by British government were located in the North Western part of the country.
He expressed his country’s support to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration especially in the fight against corruption and insecurity.
He said that Britain will not relent in its effort of providing support especially in those areas. (NAN)
