Kano – The Kano State House of Assembly has suggested periodic amendment of the Nigerian Constitution.
The suggestion was made on Wednesday by the Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, while briefing journalists on the Assembly’s activities in the past six months.
Rurum said the recommendation for the continuous process was to further deepen and entrench democracy in the country.
The speaker said the decision was part of the communique adopted after five-day retreat by the legislators in Abuja.
Rurum said that within the six months of the 8th Assembly, the Assembly passed more than 79 motions sponsored by either the Executive or members of the House.
He said some of the motions included those on education, road construction, water supply, health, electricity and construction of bridges.

Rurum said that some of the bills awaiting the House to consider were Kano State Religious Preaching Amendment Bill 2015, Kano State Sports Agency Bill 2015, Kano State Tenure of Political Office Holders and Revenue Harmonisation bills.
The speaker said the legislators also passed into law eight bills, including Kano State Appropriation Amendment Bill 2015, Kano State Promotion Agency Bill 2015 and Kano State Fostering Amendment law 2015.
He said that the House was agitating for the independence of the state legislature to ensure its financial autonomy. (NAN)
