Getso (Kano State) – The Kano State Government, has pledged to establish a cassava processing plant in Getso, Gwarzo Local Government area, to boost cassava production in the state.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made the pledge at a sensitization programme on cassava farming and access to market, held in Getso.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was organized for cassava farmers in the area by an NGO, ENABLE2, a DFID funded programme, in collaboration with Radio Kano.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner of Information, Malam Mohammed Garba, said the move was to support cassava farmers and reduce wastage of the commodity.
‘’We must reduce our dependence on oil and the only way out now is to go back to farming.
‘’Any responsible government must give priority to agriculture in view of the dwindling oil revenue’’, he said.
He assured cassava farmers in the state that the government would collaborate with relevant agencies, to enhance their productive capacity.
Ganduje disclosed that the government would also revive the state agricultural supply company, to provide easy access to fertiliser and other inputs to farmers.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Kano Radio, Hajiya Sa‘adatu Babaji thanked the state government for its support to the programme and said it would be extended to other cassava farmers across the state.
