Kano – Kano State House of Assembly, has suspended the review of the Religious Preaching Amendment Law 2015.
The Speaker, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, made the announcement on Tuesday when he received members of the State Council of Islamic Preachers (Ulama) who paid him a courtesy visit.
He said that the decision to suspend the review of the law was in compliance with the suggestions made by the council which was accepted by the legislators.
According to him, the suggestion made by the Ulama was in line with the suggestion made by majority of the legislators.
Rurum explained that the need to review the law was suggested by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje to ensure that only preachers granted permission by the government were allowed to preach in the state.
“The governor suggested the review of the law in order to ensure that anyone who preaches against the teachings of Islam is punished accordingly.

“The law has been in existence since the military regime; what we are going to do is to amend the punishment for those that preaches against the tenets of Islam, he said.
Speaking earlier, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, the Chairman, Council of Ulama in Kano state, told the Speaker that if the law was amended to restrict religious preaching, it might cause confusion in the state.
He said that there existing federal and state laws that provided rules and regulations for preachers, adding that the need to amend the law to restrict the preaching did not arise.
Khalil commended the legislators for their efforts to move the state forward. (NAN)
