Kano – The Kano State Government has subsidised the cost of fertiliser to make it affordable for farmers in the 2015 farming season.
The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Yusuf Gawuna, Gawuna made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday in Kano.
He said that farmers would no longer access fertiliser through the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES).
“With the suspension of the GES, Kano State Government has taken up full responsibility for providing farmers with fertilisers at subsidised rate.
“A bag of fertiliser is sold for N5, 500 the farmers will only pay N3, 400 while the government will pay N2, 100.”
Gawuna explained that fertilisers would be purchased and distributed through state’s Community Re-orientation Committees (CRC) at the 44 Local Government Areas in the state.
The commissioner, however, decried the slow pace at which farmers were making payments out of fear of losing their money without getting fertilisers.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
He advised farmers to pay money to CRC’s at their wards to get fertilizers.
Gawuna expressed the determination of the State Government toward development of agriculture.
He called on wealthy individuals to invest in agriculture to provide jobs for the people and boost food production. (NAN)
