Katsina –  The Katsina State Government has established a special centre for the treatment of tuberculosis patients whose system resist normal TB drugs, the Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Mariyatu Usman, said.

The commissioner told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina on Tuesday that the centre was in Rimi town of the state, noting that “government decided to establish the centre in order to provide standard treatment to patients with that condition.

“The centre is to provide special treatment to patients so as to curb the spread of the deadly disease among citizens.

“Tuberculosis is an airborne disease that if left unchecked, can spread like wild fire among rural folks.”

The commissioner added that the state government established the new centre because the former TB quarantine treatment centre
had been handed over to Federal Government to serve as VVF Treatment Centre.

Usman said the state government had secured standard drugs for the treatment of TB patients admitted in the centre and
appealed to those on admission to dedicate themselves to their treatment.

She stressed that “the call is imperative because anyone who skipped his or her treatment for a day will have to start new treatment
all over again for the period of six months.” (NAN)
