Birnin Kebbi -The Chief Judge of Kebbi, Justice Bala Mairiga, on Monday set free 21 inmates of Birnin Kebbi Prison during a jail delivery visit.
The judge also granted 13 others bail and explained that the action followed a review of cases of the inmates in line with Section 1 of the Criminal Code, 2007, of the state.
He said the visit was part of the annual practice by chief judges to uphold the constitutional rights of inmates and improve on the judicial system to ensure quick dispensation of justice.
Mairiga advised those who regained their freedom to shun unlawful conduct that could bring them back to prison by seeking employment which would enable them to contribute to the development of society.
“I will present a request for free medical treatment for inmates to the executive arm,’’ he said.
The judge commended authorities of the 111-year-old prison for the clean environment of the facility.
The Controller of Prisons, Mr Yazidu Alhassan, while briefing the chief Judge, said the 200-capacity facility had accommodated 214 awaiting trial inmates.
He called on individuals and organisations to facilitate the release of some minor offenders by settling fines imposed on them. (NAN)
