NAIROBI – Mrs Dorcas Makwoi, the focal person, Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP), Kenya, has commended Nigeria’s Agriculture Minister, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, for influencing Kenya’s agric policy formulation.
Makwoi, who gave the commendation on Sunday in Nairobi during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said Adesina’s efforts had influenced a lot of agric policies in Kenya.
According to her, when Adesina was president of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), he contributed to making policies that would boost agricultural production across Africa.
She said that the Agriculture Sector Coordinating Unit (ASCU), Kenya, was working along with some of those policies especially in the aspect of inputs.
She also commended the minister for the launch of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) through which Nigerian farmers could receive subsidised seeds and fertiliser through vouchers on their mobile phones. [eap_ad_1] She added that the policy had establish an enabling working environment for private sector to key into the business, which was what ASCU in Kenya was working towards.
She said this would enable Kenya farmers to benefit from fertiliser, seeds, feeds and pesticides without any interference from middle men.
Makwoi said that Kenya was an agro based economy and was ready to key into Adesina’s policies to improve the agric sector of the country.
She said that in terms of funding the agricultural sector through the coordination, ASCU had been able to harmonise development partners to know where to invest and areas of highest impact.
“Through our agricultural sector development strategy, the growth target has been pegged at a target of seven per cent which is above the six percent expectation from CAADP.
“We believe that agriculture growth, if it does well, would really change the economy of this country,’’ Makwoi said. (NAN)
