The Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has urged farmers, hunters, cattle breeders and other forest users to desist from bush burning .
Mr Tayo Aremu, the state Commissioner for Environment, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lokoja.
Aremu said the state government was determined to reduce bush burning to its barest minimum because of its negative effects on the environment.
He expressed the need for forestry preservation and maintenance of the Eco-system in order to avoid environmental degradation and a
dverse climate change
“Bush burning is part of the global problems contributing adversely to farmland erosion, leaching and climate change.
“Government is concerned about this issue because it wants to ensure that our forestry reserves and resources are properly kept and maintained across the state.
“The sensitisation process is ongoing to alert the public on the negative effects of bush burning, and to be cautious of its consequences.
“The government is also working to enact laws that will bring any perpetrator to book,” he said.
The commissioner also said that government was encouraging alternative renewable energy for people to substitute the use of charcoal with kerosine and gas for domestic cooking.
“The United Nations and other world bodies are collaborating with the state government to ensure that renewable energy becomes popular among the people of Kogi,” he said. (NAN)
