Lokoja- The Deputy Governor of Kogi, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, said in Lokoja on Tuesday that primary school teachers in the State would be paid salaries for October and November from Dec. 11.
Awoniyi made the announcement during a meeting with the executive members of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
He told them that adequate arrangement had been put in place for a smooth payment of the salaries within one week and thanked the teachers for their patience with the Government.
He added that efforts were being made to remove discrepancies noticed in the teachers’ payroll, stressing that they will start enjoying regular payment of salaries as from Jan. 2015.
The deputy governor explained that the problems associated with payment of teachers’ salaries dated back to 2008.
He, however, said that government had concluded plan to verify the certificates of all primary school teachers in the state, assuring that the move was to restore sanity and glory of teaching.
Chairman of the NUT, Mr Abdullahi Suleiman, commended the efforts being made by the government to clear the backlog of salaries owed primary school teachers in the state.
Suleiman said the union was in full support of the certificate verification and called for the speedy implementation of the white paper on the report submitted by the interim management committee of SUBEB.
He said that the SUBEB report, if implemented faithfully, was capable of addressing delay in promotion and irregular payment of salaries.

The Interim Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr Stephen Akwu, said the board was ready to ensure smooth payment of the backlog of salaries to the teachers.
Akwu also said that teachers will start receiving salaries regularly after the conclusion of the certificate verification early 2015. (NAN)
