Konga.com processed over N50 million sales hourly on Black Friday — CEO

Lagos- The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Konga.com, an online shop, Mr Sim Shagaya on Tuesday said that the company processed over N50 million every hour in its just-concluded Black Friday sales in Nigeria.

Shagaya said in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that this feat represented 1,440 per cent year on year increase in online revenue.

“The first edition held in 2013 and was a big success. However, the 2014 sales delivered even more outstanding results.

“On Friday, Konga.com saw a record breaking 1,440 per cent year on year increase in online revenue.

“Konga was processing N50 million worth of orders every hour and that Konga sold 500 percent more items in the two days of Yakata than it did in all of 2012,” the statement said.

NAN reports that this year’s edition of Black Friday sales was tagged Yakata, a Nigerian colloquial term meaning “final” or “completely”.

According to the statement, Konga’s Yakata sales started on Thursday and ended by midnight on Black Frida, giving shoppers more time to shop.

The statement said that “ Konga’s Yakata sales pioneered and localised the concept of Black Friday in the Nigeria e-commerce industry.

It said that the successes for Yakata came behind a lot of hard work on the part of Konga.com.

“Over the last one year, the company made the strategic decision to invest heavily in technology and other operational infrastructure.

“A very different strategy from that of other Nigerian e- commerce companies who have focused more on advertising,’’ the statement added.

It said other reasons enumerated by Sahagaya for the success story of Konga was the creation of its own delivery arm, a user-friendly website and the opening of its services to Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurs (SMEs)

“Today Konga’s marketplace platform boasts of thousands of SME owners who have stores and are actively trading on the site.

“Konga’s seller headquarters currently has more than doubled the number of products available on the site of its closest competitor,’’ the statement said.

The statement acknowledged the importance of mobile devices in the growth of e-commerce in Nigeria.

“Over 40 per cent of the people who shopped had never bought online before.

“With a significant part of Konga’s orders generated from mobile devices, it shows that e-commerce is really growing fast in Nigeria.

“This is a clear pointer that mobile is the way Nigerians will shop online in the future,’’ it quoted the CEC as saying.

The statement expressed gratitude to all customers that took part in the Yakata sales.

“Because of our customers, Konga and many small and medium size retailers that sell on our platform witnessed sales volumes that were simply staggering.

“We, as people, have made a great leap forward towards the development of e-commerce in Nigeria and the larger Africa,” it said. (NAN)
