Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has congratulated Nigerian workers as they join their counterparts all over the world in commemorating the International Workers’ Day.
Dogara sent the congratulatory message Tuesday on his twitter handle @YakubuDogara saying, “I wish to congratulate Nigerian workers as they join their counterparts the world over in commemorating the International Workers’ Day”.
May 1is a day set aside to celebrate workers’ day in Nigeria like in many other countries. Only few countries vary in their date of Workers’ Days celebration.
Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.
For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on 1 May. For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country.
In Canada and the United States, Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer, with summer vacations ending and students returning to school around then.
To mark this Workers Day Monday, Labour Unions and Nigerian workers gathered at Eagle Square, Central Business District, Abuja, to commemorate the Workers’ Day.
