The Labour Party (LP) has officially declared that Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, will be its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Obi, who contested in 2023 but finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is set to make another attempt at the presidency.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, LP National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, stated that the 2027 race would be more competitive for Tinubu. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to Obi’s candidacy, saying:
“Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious.”
On Kenneth Okonkwo’s Resignation
Arabambi also addressed the resignation of Kenneth Okonkwo from the LP, describing it as a positive development. He alleged that Okonkwo had not been fully committed to the party and had supported the ruling APC.
“We wish Kenneth Okonkwo well. His resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore,” Arabambi stated.
LP Denies Leadership Crisis
Despite concerns over internal divisions, Arabambi dismissed claims of instability within the party. He asserted that the LP remains strong and prepared for the 2027 election.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imagination of most of our detractors,” he said.
