Sundiata Post – The Labour Party (LP) has ended the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule after a resounding victory in Thursday’s general election in the United Kingdom, crossing the 326-seat mark for a working majority in the House of Commons.
Sir Keir Starmer-led Labour Party is expected to win 410 seats, with their arch rivals on 144.
Outgoing Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak conceded early Friday, disclosing he had called Starmer to congratulate him.
Sunak, who apologised to Conservatives, added that the election was a “sobering verdict”.
In his victory speech, Starmer promised to start a “national renewal” and that he would put “country first, party second”.
“A mandate like this comes with a great responsibility,” the 61-year-old said.
Meanwhile, world leaders have begun to congratulate the Labour Party on its resounding victory in the UK election.
In a message shared on X, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau said, “Congratulations, @Keir_Starmer, on a historic U.K. election victory.
“Lots of work ahead to build a more progressive, fair future for people on both sides of the Atlantic. Let’s get to it, my friend.”
Report that the Conservative Party ruled the UK for 14 years, during which five prime ministers held sway.
