Lagos – Preparatory to the 2019 general elections, the KOWA Party in Lagos State on Friday said it was targeting legislative seats at the federal and state levels to shape legislation and contribute meaningfully to democratic development.
Dr Abimbola Oyedokun, Lagos State Chairman of KOWA Party, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the legislature was not only a symbol of democracy, but also the hub of popular participation.
He said that KOWA Party recognised the critical role of legislators in governance and nation building.
According to him, it is a veritable platform for the party to push its ideology of social welfare and modernism.
”So far, we have seven candidates who have expressed their interest and picked nomination forms to represent Mushin, Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Kosofe, Badagry and Eti-Osa state and federal constituencies at national and state levels.
”It is not too late, we are still expecting more aspirants, even for governorship position in Lagos State, before the primaries next week.
”Our push, basically, is to ensure that we get our ideology into the legislative houses, and from there, we can now push and legislate for the change that we know this country needs and desires.
”The legislature is not only a symbol of democracy, but also the participatory hub of popular participation.
” As an arm of government, the legislature avails citizens the opportunity to participate in law making and oversight of the other arms of government.
”This enhances accountability in public governance and develops democracy,” he said.
Oyedokun said with competent political representation in the legislature, KOWA had a chance of being “an untainted alternative to the status quo that’s driven the country to the edge of ruin”.
On the party’s Sept. 29 primaries in Lagos, Oyedokun said preparations were in top gear.
”Our members are set to go for the forthcoming primaries.
”We have entrenched internal democracy, as every financial member of KOWA Party is an eligible delegate to any congress and convention of the party, ”he said.
