The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended Jelili Sulaimon, the chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, for an indefinite period due to misconduct and defiance.
In a session held on Monday, the Assembly directed the vice chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, to take over leadership of the council. All council officials, including the manager and treasurer, were ordered to acknowledge and support Johnson in his new position.
Sulaimon’s suspension came after allegations of disobeying the Assembly’s orders, mismanaging public funds, and being involved in an April 2024 incident in Iyana-Ipaja, which caused unrest and the death of a resident.
Lawmakers also referenced a state audit report that uncovered financial irregularities under Sulaimon’s leadership, justifying his suspension. The Assembly plans to call other local council leaders for talks on following governance rules.
