Lagos – The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday urged relevant agencies to guard against flooding as the rainy season becomes intense in the state.
This followed a motion moved by Mr Segun Olulade, the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, on the floor of the House.
The motion came following the flood that rendered residents of Poka and Imokin villages in Eredo, Epe, homeless.
Olulade, who urged residents to desist from the habit of throwing refuse into canals, said that two communities in Epe Local Government had been sacked by flood.
“It is important for all relevant agencies to enforce all regulations to ensure protection of lives and property during this rainy season,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr Dayo Saka-Fafunmi, the Chairman, House Committee on the Environment, urged relevant agencies to visit the affected areas.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, said that the government should continue to sensitise residents on the repercussion of blocking waterways with wastes and illegal building.
Obasa said that all relevant agencies needed to do the needful to avoid any unnecessary losses through flood.
The House, therefore, urged the Ministry of Environment to redouble efforts at ensuring free flow of water across the state and carrying out palliative measures in villages already affected by flood.
It charged the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to ensure that all building constructions comply with approved designs.
The House also advised the Ministry of Information and Strategy to continue sensitising the public on the danger of blocking the drains through indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
It directed the Clerk of the House, Mr Ganiyu Abiru, to write a letter to the affected ministries to take action.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that lawmakers lauded Obasa’s leadership qualities following the conferment of Speaker of the Year Award on him by the City People Magazine on May 29. (NAN)
