Lagos – The Lagos State House of Assembly said that it would partner the state government to ensure that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) employs more personnel to ease traffic control.
Mr Fatai Mojeed, the Chairman House Committee on Transportation (APC, Ibeju-Lekk1), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.
Mojeed said the committee would achieve this by convincing the state assembly to pass a law that would appropriate more funding to LASTMA.
With that, it would be able to effectively discharge its statutory responsibilities to the state, he said.
According to him, road transport is still very central to the economic activities of the state.
“Part of the efforts we are making to ensure a free-flow of traffic and bring sanity back to Lagos roads is for the state government to employ more personnel into LASTMA.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“We have discovered that the current staff strength of LASTMA is not sufficient enough for traffic control and enforcement of regulations.
“We want to make sure that more persons are injected into the work force of the agency as parts of measures to reduce the man-hours spent in gridlock,’’ he said.
He said that the development would make the presence of the traffic officials more visible on the roads when implemented, and this would minimise motorists’ disregard for traffic regulations.
“We want to put an end to the era of impunity on our roads, anybody caught violating traffic regulations will be dealt with in accordance with the law,’’ he said. (NAN)
