Lagos – The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Managing Director, Lagos State Water Corporation, Mr Muminu Badmus, to address the problem of water shortage in some parts of the state.
This followed a motion moved by Mr Desmond Elliot, the Chairman, House Committee on Arts and Tourism, under matter of public urgent importance on Tuesday.
Elliot said, “There is shortage of water in major areas of the state. The state water corporation is not making reasonable effort to address it.
“The issue, if not addressed promptly, may lead to epidemic,” he said.
The lawmaker, however, said that the corporation may be facing financial challenge to live up to its mandate.
Similarly, Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions and Human Rights said the shortage could lead to water-borne diseases.
“It is an issue that the House Committee on Environment needs to work on and address,” Tejuosho said.
The Chairman, House Committee on Lands, Mr Bayo Oshinowo, said the House needed to invite the General Manager of the Corporation to explain the reason for the shortage.
Lawmakers took turns to decry the untold hardship being experienced by residents due to water shortage and urged relevant agencies to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa said the House Committee on Finance and House Committee on Environment should invite the management of the corporation for explanation.
Obasa urged the committees to ask the corporation to throw more light on the challenges it was facing.
The speaker said that all stakeholders should work collectively on the issue in order to find a lasting solution to the problem. (NAN)
