Lagos – Anthony Adeboye, the Senior Special Assistant on Sports to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, on Tuesday said the state government would support the national F5WC tournament.
Adeboye said in a news statement in Lagos that the support was one of the plans by the government to use sports as a veritable tool for youth empowerment.
Speaking also on the competition, Bayo Akande, the Managing Director of Fivesports, organisers of the tournament, said the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had endorsed the competition.
He said participating teams would be from state football associations in Ogun, Kano and Kaduna states.
“There will be 16 teams of seven players each converging in Lagos for two days of football, with the winning team representing Nigeria at the F5WC tournament in Bangkok, Thailand in March.
“The national F5WC will be played in a round-robin format, with the 16 participants drawn into four groups and the top two teams qualifying for the quarter-finals,’’ Akande said.
He added that the eventual winners would also get a giant trophy, medals and the sum of N1.5 million from the competition’s main sponsor, Olympic Milk.
