LAGOS – The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Manko, on Wednesday urged parents, guardians and teachers to promote reading culture among their children and wards.
The police boss spoke at the maiden Inspector- General of Police ‘Bring Back the Book’ Competition, in Ikeja.
Manko was represented by the Commander of the Area F of the police command, Mr Tunde Adagunduro.
The competition was organised by the Research and Planning, South/West Zone, Directorate of Police Education.
Manko said that reading was gradually fading away as children preferred to play computer games to reading books.
“Reading among children has drastically dropped. No child wants to spend time reading; they prefer to go on the Internet and play computer games,’’ he said.
Manko noted that the dwindling reading habit of most children had negatively affected their reading for examinations.
“Great men made it because they read their books; too much emphasis on qualification has made the youth to look for high grades without putting seriousness into reading,” Manko said.
He advised parents to encourage their children to read literature books at leisure.
The Head, Research and Planning, South West Zone of the Directorate of Police Education, Mrs Stella Igbonwelundu, said that no educational endeavour could thrive without a positive reading culture.
“There is practically no vocation across the globe that does not require reading; it is only through reading that true knowledge can be acquired,’’ she said.
The eight schools that participated in the competition, Police Children School (PCS) Obalende 1, represented by Chinemezu Onwusoanya ( aged 9) and Ikimoye Awoikiega (8), emerged the winner.
PCS Osuke-Ota came second and PCS Satellite, third. (NAN)
