Lagos- A total of 4,950 athletes from 518 schools are taking part in the 2015 edition of the Lagos State Secondary Schools Sports Festival which began on Monday.
The Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Sports Council, Mr Bashi Agunloye, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Agunloye said that the festival, tagged “Ibile 2015”, would feature 23 sports events.
He expressed the hope that the event, to end on Feb. 6, would be more successful than the previous editions.
NAN reports that the 12-day sports festival began with matches in basketball at Rowe Park.
“ We are pleased to say that the festival will be better organised compared to the previous editions.
“The sports festival commenced today with male and female basketball matches and tennis draws.

“Logistics required for a successful festival are already in place; schools have submitted lists of participating athletes.
“Six sports will have their games played here, at the Rowe Park. They include: gymnastics, weightlifting, tennis, basketball, wrestling and badminton,’’ he told NAN.
The official said that other centres for the festival included, Teslim Balogun Stadium, National Stadium, University of Lagos Sports Centre and Union Bank Sports Centre in Surulere.
NAN reports that the festival is one of the state government’s grassroots sports development programmes.
It is open to both public and private secondary schools in the state. (NAN)
