Modupeola Kalejaiye (nee Olumegbon), the Lagos State Coordinator of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), has lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for proclaiming Yoruba Week in Lagos State.
In a press release, Kalejaiye expressed her gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for the historic declaration of Yoruba Week, which designates the last week of September annually. This decision, following a resolution by the Lagos State House of Assembly on September 19, 2023, is hailed as a significant milestone.
“The proclamation of Yoruba Week by the Lagos State government is a testament to our collective acknowledgment of the profound influence of Yoruba culture on our identity, language, arts, and customs,” Kalejaiye remarked. “This celebration will serve as a unifying force and a source of pride for all Lagosians.”
Yoruba Week will be a platform to showcase the rich heritage of the Yoruba people, encompassing traditional music, dance, attire, cuisine, and storytelling. Through these cultural expressions, Lagosians will honor their ancestry and inspire future generations.
“As writers, we understand the power of storytelling to shape perceptions and foster cultural appreciation,” Kalejaiye emphasized. “Yoruba Week encourages us to weave narratives that celebrate our heritage, resilience, and creativity. Let us embrace our native language, celebrate our folklore, and amplify Yoruba voices. Our cultural pride will strengthen our sense of belonging and foster unity.”
The literary legacy of the Yoruba people, including luminaries like Modupeola Kalejaiye herself, D.O. Fagunwa, Amos Tutuola, and Wole Soyinka, will be celebrated during Yoruba Week. Lagos aims to pay homage to these literary giants and inspire emerging writers to explore Yoruba themes in their creative pursuits.
Yoruba communities worldwide are invited to participate in Yoruba Week, either virtually or by visiting Lagos during the festivities. The week seeks to connect continents, facilitate cultural exchange, and strengthen the global Yoruba network.
“We encourage all Lagosians to actively engage in Yoruba Week events, foster dialogue, and celebrate our shared heritage,” Kalejaiye urged. “Let us use this platform to amplify Yoruba voices, cherish our traditions, and promote cultural understanding.”
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers applauds Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his administration for this initiative. “By commemorating Yoruba Week, we reinforce our collective unity and enrich the cultural fabric that defines Lagos State as a bastion of diversity and creativity,” Kalejaiye concluded. “His visionary leadership ensures the vibrancy and relevance of our heritage. We eagerly anticipate a memorable inaugural Yoruba Week and the festivities to come.”
The press release closes with the Yoruba phrase “ILU EKO ONIBAJE O!”
