Lagos – Mr Arowosegbe Aderibigbe, the best graduating student of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo 2014/2015 set on Wednesday lauded Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s effort in rebranding the institution.
Aderibigbe gave the commendation when he made a remark on behalf of the graduating students at the university’s 20th convocation.
He, however, urged the governor to enhance research and infrastructure development in the institution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aderibigbe, of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, graduated as the best student with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4.68.
He said: “It gladdens the heart of students that LASU is now wearing a new look through the assistance of the Lagos State Government.
“I will like to appreciate the university authorities for their tireless efforts to make LASU the pride of the world through the assistance and goodwill of the Lagos State Government.
“Although, the new look gladdens our heart, a lot still needs to be done to enhance research and infrastructure development across the faculties.
“Our goal is to become the best university in Africa and this can be achieved in the nearest future because we have some of the best brains in the world,” he said.
Aderibigbe urged his colleagues to be good ambassadors of the university and to collectively build a great nation where children unborn would be proud to be Nigerians.
Earlier, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, Vice-Chancellor of LASU, said that the governor’s vision was “critically enabling the institution, not only to have a healthy self esteem, but also engender productive achievement’’.
Fagbohun said, “What this governor has achieved for us is what I call ‘Operation Renovate LASU’.
“The governor tarred our entire road network, repaired our drainage system, released funds to complete all ongoing projects initiated by the state government.
”Also, he revamped our water system, lit up the entire campus, and signed into law provisions that would ensure enduring peace, among others,” he said.
The vice-chancellor said that 17,695 graduands would be issued their certificates at the convocation.
Fagbohun said that 6, 241 students graduated from the full-time programme, with seven students making first class degree, 1,040 second class upper, and 3,271 second class lower.
He said that 1,575 made third class, while 206 students graduated with pass.
According to him, at the External System, one student made first class, 1,016 second class upper division, 6,990 second class lower, 767 third class, while 10 students made pass.
He promised that the university would offer automatic employment to those that graduated with first class, while those with second class upper would be considered later. (NAN)
