Lawyer in court for allegedly issuing N350,000 dud cheque to landlord

ABUJA – The police on Monday arraigned a 34-year-old lawyer, Seun Ojo, in a Kado Upper Area Court in Abuja for issuing a dud cheque to his landlord.

Ojo, of suit 27, Hiltop Plaza, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, is charged with cheating and mischief.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Salisu Mohammed, told the court that Bali Thomas of No. 18, 7th Avenue, Gwarimpa, Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police Station, Abuja, on April 17.

Mohammed said that the accused issued a N350,000 cheque to the complainant in December 2013, but was not honoured on presentation in the bank.

He said that the accused person issued the cheque knowing well that he did not have sufficient funds in his account.

The prosecutor added that the accused person also damaged the complainant’s bath tub in the apartment he occupied, valued at N18,000 which contravened the provision of sections 322 and 327 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the accused is liable to 15 years imprisonment or an option of fine or both.

However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The presiding judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of N20,000 and a surety in like sum.

Sadiq said the surety must have a fixed address and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction as he adjourned the case until May 21 for further hearing. (NAN)
