Abuja – Some Abuja-based lawyers on Sunday advocated a better regulatory practice under the new administration of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) to address indiscipline among lawyers.
Mr Ahmed Raji, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that there was need for better regulations among lawyers.
“There is room for improvement and there is need for better regulations among lawyers.
“Though there had been low standards in the profession, that is not to say there are no good lawyers with Good ethical conducts.
Raji advised that the body of lawyers self-regulate the profession by way of prescribed standards for its members.
“I think this will be taking care of by the new administration of the NBA under Mr Abubakar Mahmoud, (SAN),” Raji said.
Similarly, Mr Paul Erokoro, (SAN), reacting to an alleged report of lawyers who wrote examinations for fellow lawyers at the Nigerian Law School, condemned the act.
Erokoro said that though the ethical standards in the profession had fallen, there could be room for better regulations by the new administration of NBA.
“We know that some of our lawyers were engaged in corrupt practices and it is a shame, they should fish them out and deal with them accordingly, ” Erokoro said.
Another layer, Mr Olakanmi Olajide, called on the new administration of NBA to address indiscipline in the profession.
Olajide condemned situations whereby lawyers walked out on judges during proceedings and urged that such lawyers be banished from the profession. (NAN)
