MUSAWA – The Musawa Local Government Council in Katsina State said it earmarked N4 million for the rehabilitation of boreholes and semi-urban water schemes in the area.
The Council Chairman, Alhaji Tanimu Kira, disclosed this on Friday while handing over the working tools to the council’s Director of Water and Sanitation, Alhaji Adamu Hussaini-Garu.
Kira said the initiative was aimed at improving potable water supply in the area to safeguard public health.
He said that boreholes’ spare parts and other tools for the project were supplied through a committee established by the council.
He said the exercise would be handled through direct labour by the water and sanitation department, in collaboration with community water supply voluntary groups.
The Chairman further explained that the project was meant to ease water scarcity in the area and to provide clean, potable water to the people.
Kira said that his administration would continue to attach importance to the provision of clean water which was necessary to improve public health.
He added that the exercise would be executed in piece-meal to reduce cost.
He said that five damaged hand pump boreholes were expected to be repaired in each of the 10 wards in the area.
The chairman said motorised and solar powered boreholes would be converted to hand pump because of the persistent difficulties the users faced in maintenance.
According to him, the council spends N360,000 monthly for supply of diesel and other items on the semi urban water systems at Musawa and Jikamshi communities.
He, therefore, called on the people to support the council’s effort to ensure better results, adding that a programme was designed to sink open wells at places that had difficulties in drilling boreholes.
Kira commended Gov. Ibrahim Shema for encouraging the councils to embark on programmes aimed at improving the lives of the people.
He pledged increased cordial relationship with the police and other security agencies to enhance the security of lives and property in the area.
Responding, the Director, Water and Sanitation, Alhaji Adamu Hussaini-Garu, said the council had earlier rehabilitated 108 boreholes at N3.8 million in 2013.
Husssaini-Garu added that N3.2 million was expended on upgrading, conversion of solar powered boreholes and motorised boreholes in 2012.
he said the efforts had yielded positive impacts as water bone diseases and others had drastically reduced due good water supply in the localities.
He called on residents to redouble efforts on protection of water supply facilities and other public infrastructure from being vandalised.(NAN)
