Enugu – The legislative arm of Igbo Etiti Local Government Council of Enugu State has passed a Bill for a by-law against indiscriminate bush burning in the area.
Leader of the council’s legislature, Mr Godwin Ugwu, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday.
He said that the measure was to forestall damages to lives and properties in the area.
Ugwu said that members of neighbourhood security groups had been found to be conniving with hunters in the act of indiscriminate bush burning in the area.
“It has been observed that if the nefarious activities perpetrated by hunters in our council area are not checked, it will escalate to loss of lives and properties in the near future.
“Thus, the legislative council finds it timely to pass this all-important bill to checkmate the heinous act of these desperate hunters and to prevent breakdown of law and order in the area,” he said.
Ugwu said that the council had also passed another bill prohibiting the use of motorcycles from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the area.
He said the law was also timely and crucial to the internal security of lives in the area.
The leader explained that the proposed law was intended to check activities of hoodlums who hid under the guise of commercial motorcycle operators to perpetrate crimes.
He said that the council found it imperative to pass the bill to forestall the ugly trend, which was hampering the security of lives and properties in the area.
He recalled that the state’s House of Assembly had passed a motion banning the use of motorcycles in the three metropolitan council areas in the state.
“For us in the council area, we are conscious of the fact that we are not among the three metropolitan council areas but our concern is to prevent the use of motorcycle to commit crime,” he said. (NAN)
