ENUGU – Local Government Service Commission in Enugu State, has introduced the use of biometrics to check incidences of ghost workers in the 17 council areas of the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Mr Emeka Nwatu announced this on Wednesday in Enugu in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said the commission had observed that majority of workers in local government councils come to work towards the end of the month apparently to collect their salaries.
Nwatu said: “But since we introduced the biometrics system, incidences of ghost workers and truancy has been curtailed.
“We were able to establish the number of authentic staff we have in local government councils because this ghost workers syndrome is not a joke.
“In some local governments with high wage bill, we discovered that 40 per cent of the bills were fake with the introduction of biometrics system.”
Nwatu said the commission would publish the names of ghost workers in the headquarters of the 17 local government councils in June this year.
The chairman added that the commission would soon introduce “No work no pay” to ensure that people work for their pay and to boost productivity.
He said that he had directed the heads of department in all the local government councils to open attendance and movement registers to monitor movement of their staff.
He said the commission would soon come up with measures to deal with workers involved in truancy. (NAN)
