Uyo – The Nigeria Police Force, Akwa Ibom Command, said it arrested and arraigned 126 defaulters and secured 119 convictions between April 20 and April 24, through the special courts established to try violators of the coronavirus lockdown.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Nnudam Fredrick, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Friday.
Fredrick announced that within the same period, 385 motor vehicles, 336 tricycles and 474 motorcycles were impounded by the Command across the state.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal, as urging Akwa Ibom residents to ensure compliance with the quarantine and restriction of movement order, adding that it was in their best interest.
The Commissioner of Police commended other security agencies in the state, who joined the police to effectively to enforce the lockdown.
He said the police would continue to ensure restriction of movement across all sea and land borders in the state, stressing that all the borders remained closed except those on essential duties.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on April 15, the state Chief Judge, Godwin Abraham, inaugurated special courts across the three senatorial districts to try defaulters of the Quarantine and Restriction of Movement Regulations, 2020.
