Hon. Eze Gabriel, who represents the Isi-Uzo constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, has left the Labour Party and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He was elected as a member of the Labour Party during the 2023 general election. However, during a House plenary session on Tuesday, he officially announced his defection. His letter, read out by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, explained the reasons behind his decision.
The lawmaker said he felt sad about leaving but explained that his decision was based on serious and ongoing problems within the Labour Party both at the national and state levels. He said, “anchored on the existence of irreconcilable divisions, incessant crisis and factionality within the Labour Party at the National level and my state here in Enugu.”
He further added, “Regrettably, the party is now in a state of perpetual discord with various factions embroiled in legal battles, thereby undermining its ability to effectively serve the interest of the people.”
Hon. Eze said the Labour Party used to be seen as a symbol of progressive ideas, but now it is known for internal conflicts. He said this has weakened the party’s ability to meet the hopes of voters. In his words, “the Labour Party, once a beacon of hope for progressive ideals has regrettably, become synonymous with internal strives, thereby diminishing its capacity to fulfil the aspirations of the electorates.”
He also referred to recent clashes at the national level between Barr. Abure Julius and Senator Usman Nenadi, as well as local disputes in Enugu between Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera and Barr. Casmir Agbo. He described these conflicts as clear signs of the party’s deep divisions.
Hon. Eze said he believes the PDP will give him the support he needs to continue working for the development of Enugu State. He also thanked his supporters for their understanding.
