Lagos – Lawson Ojo, the Captain, Lagos State Cycling Association (LSCA), has renewed his call on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to revive the sport in the country.
Ojo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, urged the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) to ensure that Nigeria featured in the sport at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil.
He said the long neglect of the sport by both the NSC and the NOC had relegated it to the background in Nigeria.
“To be candid, cycling is dying; many of my colleagues who were passionate about the sport are now discouraged due to its long absence in major sporting tournaments like the National Sports Festival.
“Facilities are not there for training and there are no competitions to stir us up, many of us have gotten tired after years of training without competitions to test our abilities.
“The NSC, the NOC, corporate bodies, as well as philanthropists, should rescue the sport from total extinction in Nigeria, “ the LSCA captain said.
He noted that cycling was one of the most recognised sports in the Olympics in the developed world and appealed that it be given attention in Nigeria like other sports.
Ojo said the NSC and the NOC could revive the sport by providing adequate facilities, as well as giving it the required attention. (NAN)
