Lucky loser Danilovic claims maiden title in Moscow

Moscow   –      Serbian teenager Olga Danilovic became the first player born in the 2000s to win a WTA title, defeating fellow 17-year-old Anastasia Potapova 7-5 6-7(1) 6-4 in the Moscow River Cup final.

Having squandered an opportunity to close out the match in the second set, Danilovic was forced to recover from a break down in the decider in the match on Sunday.

But she held on to become the first lucky loser to win a WTA title.

World number 187 Danilovic is also the youngest title winner at tour level since Ana Konjuh’s triumph at Nottingham in 2015.

The left-handed Danilovic was granted a place in the main draw in spite of losing the final round of qualifying.

But she demonstrated an impressive commitment to all-out aggression in her first career final, with 49 winners and 46 unforced errors.

Russian wildcard Potapova, who had won both the previous singles encounters with Danilovic at junior level, fought hard to stay in the contest.

But she was undone by 32 unforced errors as opposed to only 18 winners.
