BAMAKO – Malian Prime Minister Oumar Ly-Tatam on Tuesday in Tienfala, East of Bamako launched its first large scale operation campaign for artificial insemination of cows.
He said the programme would lead to the insemination of 10,000 cows per year for 5 years with a success rate of between 60 and 70 per cent.
Ly-Tatam said the exercise would increase milk production of local cows from 5-8 litres of milk per day to 15-20 litres per day during lactation.
A report from the Malian Ministry of Livestock said this was aimed at improving the production of milk and meat through crossbreeding using insemination of local cows.
It said the process would also reduce extensive breeding and favors production of milk and meat.
According to the ministry, the exercise came under the new Mali-Morocco cooperation with the donation of 125,000 doses of insemination vaccines to the Malian government by the Mohamed VI Foundation.
The new Mali-Morocco cooperation includes training and upgrading Malian inseminators dozens of whom are already being trained in Morocco. (PANA/NAN)
