ADO EKITI (Sundiata Post) – A 20-year-old man, Ajayi Oluwasunkanmi, on Tuesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and breach of public peace.
The prosecutor, Insp. Olasunkanmi Bamikole told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 23, at about 10:00p.m in Ado-Ekiti.
Bamikole said the defendant obstructed and assaulted a Police Inspector, Madaki Sylvester, by inflicting injury on him while discharging his lawful duty.
He said that the defendant also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace in the public.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 181(1)(d) and 187(b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Tolulope Bewaji urged the court to grant his client bail with a promise that he would not jump bail.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefunke Anoma, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case until April 29, for mention. (NAN)
