LAGOS – A 22-year-old man, Abiola Adeyanju, who allegedly attempted to rape a 13-year-old girl, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos,
The accused, who resides at No. 4, Ilashe St., Ikota area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of attempted rape and sexual assault.
The prosecutor Insp. Godwin Anyanwun told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 18, at about 1:00 a.m., at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ikota Villa Estate, Lekki, Lagos.
He said that the accused ambushed the 13-year-old around 1:00 a.m. when she stepped out of the vigil organised by the church to answer the call of nature.
According to the prosecutor, Adeyanju hit her on the face with a blow and attempted to rape her.
Anyanwun explained that some members of the church, who heard the screams from the girl, immediately rushed out to apprehend the accused.
The prosecutor said the offences committed contravened Sections 21 and 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 260 provides that anyone who attempts to commit the offence of rape or sexual assualts by penetration is guilty of a felony, and is liable to 14 years imprisonment.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrates, Mrs M.A Osibanjo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Dec. 15 for substantive trial (NAN).
