Ibadan – An Iyaganku Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Thursday sentenced one Muritala Mohammed to three months imprisonments for stealing a half bag of onions valued at N10,000.
The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Munirat Giwa-Babalola, sentenced Mohammed to serve the term at the Agodi Prisons, Ibadan after the convict pleaded guilty to the act of stealing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mrs Giwa-Babalola sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to the offence and begged the court for leniency.
She, however, gave the convict an option of a N50, 000 fine.

Mohammed, a load carrier at the Bodija market, with no known address, was arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing.
NAN reports that the Prosecutor, Cpl. Kola Olaiya, tendered the statements of Taiwo Ayoola, the security guard, who assisted in Mohammed’s arrest.
Olaiya told the court that Mohammed on Feb. 27, at about 5:30 a.m. at the Bodija market, stole half a bag of onions being property of one Abdullahi Usman.
Olaiya said Mohammed committed the offence on Feb. 27, at about 5:30 a.m. at Bodija market.
He said the offence contravened section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap .38, Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
NAN reports that Section 390 (9) attracts three years imprisonment. (NAN)
