Man, 52, docked for obtaining N1.38m under false pretence

Lagos  – A 52-year-old businessman was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on allegation of obtaining N1.38 million from a client under false pretences.

The accused, Yemi Thomas, who resides at No. 25, Oshile Quarters, Akure, Ondo State, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretences.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused collected the money from Mr Ogunleye Emmanuel, a Port Harcourt-based businessman on July 2015.

According to Ayorinde, the accused collected the money from the businessman at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, under the pretext of assisting him to buy 20-feet container cold room.

“Thomas was paid N1 million through his account and N380, 000 in cash as logistics to convey the container to Port Harcourt.

“After collecting the money, the accused neither delivered the container nor returned the money to the complainant,” Ayorinde said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Thomas, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. J. Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 18 for mention. (NAN)
