Lagos – A motorcyclist, Idowu Olayinka, who allegedly bolted with a new motorcycle valued at N150,000 on the pretext of buying it on hire purchase, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Olayinka, 21, whose address is not known, is facing a charge of stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Ikuoimose, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in September 2014 at Araromi in Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb.
He said the accused stole the motorcycle belonging to Mr Lukman Azeez after he had agreed to buy it for N300, 000 on hire purchase.
“The complainant and the accused agreed that the N300, 000 will be paid on instalments of N10, 000 weekly.
“The accused disappeared with the motorcycle without telling the complainant of his whereabouts.
“All efforts to track him down were unsuccessful until he was sighted by the complainant’s friend in Adigbe area of Abeokuta in Ogun where he was arrested,” he said.
Okuoimose said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr O. A. Aka-Bashorun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
